Abstract

Tuberculosis (TB) is a chronic infectious disease that can manifest as active TB and latent TB. Nutritional status, assessed by Body Mass Index (BMI), influences the immune response and may be associated with TB pathogenesis. This study aims to compare BMI between patients with active TB and those with latent TB. This a cross-sectional analytical study was conducted at two hospitals in Cimahi. Data were obtained from medical records, Molecular Rapid Test (TCM) examination, Interferon-Gamma Release Assay (IGRA), chest X-rays, and measuremnets of weight and height. Data analysis was performed using the Chi-square test. This study involved 64 subjects who met the inclusion criteria consisting of 32 active TB patients and 32 latent TB patients. Both groups were predominantly composed of adults of productive-age and males. Among active TB patients, the underweight category predominated (68.8%), whereas among latent TB patients, the normal BMI category predominated (56.3%). There was a significant difference in BMI between the two groups (p<0.001). Active TB is associated with lower BMI, whereas latent TB tends to be associated with normal BMI.
